Wise Words for Each Day: A Devotional on Proverbs

Rodney E. Zwonitzer

DESCRIPTION:

Proverbs makes for the perfect biblical book for a daily devotional as its 31 chapters match up perfectly with the varying days in the months.  Also, surprisingly to some, it is centered on Jesus Christ, the Wisdom of God and Lady Wisdom here in Proverbs.  Finding Jesus Christ in Proverbs is truly the unique feature of this devotional.  Unique also are several features of each day's devotion:  a crafted Prayer and A For Further Study/Word Connect section for those who want to go deeper than the 2-3 minute daily dosage of God's Wisdom.

EXCERPT:

THE LORD IS IN CONTROL OF WISDOM

The eyes of the LORD keep watch over knowledge, but he overthrows the words of the traitor.  Proverbs 22:12

Who will ensure that true wisdom wins in the end?  God!  He tells the traitors and the wise that the traitor will not succeed in the end.  He keeps watch and cries it out to all to hear and follow and he even "overthrows" the lies dressed up as wisdom.  They are traitors because they rebel against this true God in the manner of their leader, Satan.  God sees everything, i.e. in anthropomorphic terms, "His eyes keep watch."  He really doesn't have eyes, but He sees it all, He knows it all, He protects wisdom and defeats all contenders.  In the end, His wisdom will prevail.  In the cross of Jesus Christ, He is victorious!  For us this means we should stand with the winner, in the Gospel, and aid in defeating all pretenders.  The advantages and blessings of this wisdom are profound and touch all whom it comes in contact with, whether they agree or like it not.  Our wise and all-knowing, all-seeing God insures it!

Dr. Andrew Steinmann, author of Concordia Commentary: Proverbs

"Noting that Jesus Christ is himself wisdom incarnate, Pastor Zwonitzer unpacks each wonderful saying not as a moralism, but yet another dimension of Christ's virtues given to the baptized faithful to apply in their daily lives."     Rev. Dr. Harold Senkbeill, author of The Care of Souls and Christ and Calamity.
